Jason Simpson has joined the NBC 13/WVTM-TV News team from Birmingham as a weatherman, the station announced this week.
Simpson will appear on WVTM 13 News weeknights at 6 and 10 p.m.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring home a seasoned meteorologist who has been part of some of the most historic weather coverage in Alabama for decades. Jason’s knowledge of our community and experience tracking storms makes him a perfect addition to our team of meteorologists,” said WVTM 13 President and CEO Susana Schuler, according to a press release.
“We are delighted to welcome Jason, his wife Lacey and their family home.”
Simpson was most recently a senior scientist for Dynetics, Inc. in Huntsville where he tested and analyzed radar systems. Prior to Dynetics, Simpson was chief meteorologist at WHNT, the CBS affiliate in Huntsville, for more than a decade. Simpson also worked as a meteorologist at WBMA, the ABC branch in Birmingham, in addition to stations in Meridian, Miss., and Columbia, Mo.
“I look forward to getting back to work serving Central Alabama with Team WVTM 13,” Simpson said in the statement. “This group is the best of the best in local news, and I feel especially honored to work alongside a man I’ve admired for years in Jerry Tracey. My wife and I started our family in the area of Birmingham over a decade ago. We look forward to coming home, reuniting with old friends, making new ones, and serving as and wherever we can in this community.
“Providing accurate and timely forecasts is one of the most important things we do as local broadcasters,” said WVTM 13 News Director Baylor Long. “Jason understands that responsibility and knows the dedication it takes. to provide vital weather information using tools such as WVTM 13’s live Doppler radar.”
Simpson will begin appearing on weekday evening newscasts beginning August 8. He joins a WVTM 13 weather team that already includes meteorologists Jerry Tracey, Stephanie Walker, Adrian Castellano and Harmony Mendoza.
