ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Former meteorologist Eric Sorensen will run for Congress as a Democrat for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.
Incumbent Cheri Bustos announced on April 30, 2021 that she would not stand for re-election in 2022.
Sorensen is a former Rockford and Quad Cities market meteorologist. He was a meteorologist at the NBC branch in Rockford for many years until he left in 2014 to become the senior morning meteorologist at the ABC branch in Moline, Illinois. He retired from television earlier in 2021.
Rockford is Sorensen’s hometown as he also graduated from Boylan Central Catholic High School.
His campaign, Eric Sorensen for Illinois released the following statement to 23 News explaining why he is running for Congress:
I want to continue to be a trusted leader in my hometown.
Meteorologists build confidence, accurately forecasting all kinds of weather conditions and I’m proud to have been doing this in my hometown for over a decade.
I always believed that the meteorologist worked for people, not for the TV station. These are the people who are in danger when there is a tornado or when they slide through an icy intersection.
Looking ahead, I’ve always been frustrated that we don’t have people with a science background speaking on our behalf in Washington. It’s not just about being passionate about protecting our environment, it’s about having the scientific knowledge to trigger change.
When it comes to trust, I often ask myself “why don’t people trust Congress?” I think it’s because the people who go there don’t spend enough time gaining people’s trust.
I believe everyone in our community deserves an opportunity. It means education, sustainable jobs and affordable, quality health care.
Rockford Second Ward councilor Jonathan Logemann, Rock Island County board member Angie Normoyle and Marsha Williams have said they are running as Democrats for the seat of the 17th Congressional District.
Esther Joy King, former 2020 Illinois 17th Congressional District candidate, and Charlie Hemlick have both said they are running for office as Republicans.
