Jason Mikell is a meteorologist at wkyc studios in Cleveland, Ohio specializing in weather forecasting and climate change in northeast Ohio.
CLEVELAND – A Southern gentleman at heart, Jason Mikell joined the 3News team in September 2021 from our sister station KVUE in Austin, Texas, where he was a meteorologist, traffic reporter and Emmy-nominated morning presenter.
Jason previously worked in Buckeye State at WLIO in Lima, Ohio, starting in 2016 as a weekend meteorologist and later that year was promoted to chief meteorologist. His love for meteorology began at a very young age growing up in southern Mississippi.
“Severe storms were of great interest to me growing up. From watching my local station WDAM, tornado drills at school, to experiencing one of the most destructive storms in US history: Hurricane Katrina. All of this impacted my decision to return to for my second degree: Meteorology. ”
Jason graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a focus on Human Resources. After graduation he moved to Philadelphia where he worked in recruiting for Behavioral Health and then Creative. After several years in this industry, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Operational Meteorology from Mississippi State University, where he graduated with Distinction.
He has completed duplicate internships with the National Weather Service Mount Holly / Philadelphia and Fox 29 in Philadelphia, PA.
Having previously lived in Mississippi, Ohio and Texas, Jason has had his share of extreme weather conditions, from two of the heaviest snowfalls in Philadelphia history, Super Storm Sandy, to a tornado outbreak in western Ohio, historic flooding in central Texas and countless others.
Jason has received numerous awards over the course of his life including a state championship victory, raising over $ 7,500 in the Real Men Wear Pink Breast Cancer Campaign through the American Cancer Society, being named to the Ohio School Boards Association Media Honor Roll and even better writing. Competition. He is a former “Grand” of the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, a current member of the Gamma Theta Upsilon fraternity, the Phi Theta Kappa fraternity, the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association and was previously a member of the Austin LGBT Board of Directors. A self-proclaimed foodie and avid music lover, travel is one of Jason’s biggest interests. He can’t wait to explore Northeast Ohio’s many hidden gems.
