SAN ANTONIO – KENS 5 today announced that meteorologist Ryan Shoptaugh has joined the CBS affiliate’s weather team. San Antonio native Shoptaugh will appear on KENS 5’s weekend evening newscasts and provide local viewers with weather updates on the station’s digital platforms.
“Ryan is a terrific meteorologist with strong ties to Texas. We are excited to have him return to San Antonio to join our weather team,” said KENS 5 News Director Jack Acosta.
KENS 5 Weather Chief Bill Taylor added, “South Texas weather is unique, and we’re excited to add another meteorologist with first-hand experience predicting our weather models.” KENS 5 has the largest and most experienced team of meteorologists in town.
Born in the town of Alamo, Shoptaugh is the son of a retired Air Force serviceman and a graduate of William J. Brennan High School in the far west of town. His passion for weather led him to the meteorology program at the University of the Incarnate Word, where he graduated in 2017.
Ryan began his broadcasting career in the Rio Grande Valley at KGBT. It joined KENS 5’s sister station KIII in Corpus Christi in 2018. Both KENS and KIII are owned by TEGNA, one of the nation’s largest broadcasting companies.
“Returning to the city where I was born to work in meteorology was one of my goals. I grew up with KENS 5 always on in the living room during dinner, being very careful about how the weather would affect my activities,” Shoptaugh said. “Joining KENS 5 is an opportunity to learn from some of the best meteorologists, expand my weather knowledge, and provide viewers with the most accurate, up-to-date, and timely forecasts.”
Shoptaugh is a die-hard San Antonio Spurs fan and enjoys traveling, hiking across the country and trying new foods around town.
It will debut at KENS 5 on November 29.
