Meteorologist Katie goes live from the drive-thru

KMBC meteorologist Katie Horner managed to come out of the cold Thursday morning for a live update on the snowstorm; all it needed was a second job. Another Channel 9 weatherman, Nick Bender, was in a live weather update amid his 7am forecast. Expecting to get an update on road conditions, Bender encountered this. “Wait. Welcome to McLain. Can I take your order?” Horner said with a straight face, live from the McLain’s Bakery drive-thru. The KMBC meteorologist not only presented Kansas citizens’ perspective on current road conditions, but also cinnamon rolls and coffee. Horner surprised everyone, including Bender, with his surprise live location. “Are you at McLain’s?” Bender said in disbelief, perhaps a little jealous that he didn’t deliver the nine-day forecast for one of his favorite KC coffees and breakfasts. Those in the drive-thru were delighted to see the Channel 9 crew at the bakery they braved the roads for. Managing to juggle the two jobs, Horner asked a customer how the road conditions were on his trip to the bakery, “Oh amazing, McLain’s is the best place in the world,” the drive-thru customer said. They were probably a little distracted by the cinnamon bun the moonlit weatherman had just handed to him. He said the roads weren’t too bad but definitely a bit slippery when asked again. Hard to blame the driver for being enthusiastic about the KC staple. The first McLain’s has been in town for over 60 years. McLain’s market is now in Waldo, Overland Park, Shawnee, and two in Lawrence, Kansas. You can order online from them here. Unfortunately, you probably won’t see Horner at the drive-thru after today. She may have to stick to the weather rather than the almond cheese pockets. “Do you want ketchup with that cinnamon bun?” said Horner. Oh and don’t worry, Bender finally got some McLains.
