The meteorology department says that due to low-level atmospheric disturbances developing near the island, downpours on the island are expected to improve from tomorrow (23).
Today, showers or thunderstorms can occur in the northern, north-central and eastern provinces during the evening or overnight.
Fair weather will prevail elsewhere, the department said.
The general public is urged to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by strong winds and temporary and localized lightning during thunderstorms.
Showers or thunderstorms may occur in several places in the sea areas stretching from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanturai, Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the afternoon or at night.
The winds will be from the northwest and the speed will be (20-30) km / h in the maritime areas around the island.
Wind speeds can sometimes increase to (40-45) km / h in the sea areas stretching from Galle to Matara and from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Batticaloa.
