The National Meteorological Center is organizing a series of webinars titled “Rain Improvement Pole”

Abu Dhabi-UAE: – The National Meteorological Center (NCM) today unveiled a series of webinars under the theme “Public Rain Improvement” to highlight various aspects of research and practical aspects of the science of improving rain and changing the weather.

Organized by the United Arab Emirates Research Program for Rain Improvement Science (UAEREP), the virtual sessions attract the participation of many leading local and international scientists, researchers, experts and stakeholders in research on improving rain and weather modification.

By hosting this webinar series, NCM aims to provide an interactive virtual platform to bring together members of the research community to share their knowledge and expertise in the science of rain improvement and weather modification and educate the public on their crucial role in achieving global water security.

His Excellency Dr Abdulla Al Mandous, Director of NCM and President of WMO Regional Association II (Asia), said: “At a time when the world is facing an unprecedented crisis due to the epidemic COVID-19, this webinar series takes on significance in advancing the science of improving rain. As an important area of research, improved rainfall has come a long way in tackling global water stress and meeting the growing demand for this vital resource. We are confident that the topics covered by these sessions will be an important reference for various stakeholders, furthermore, they support the objectives of the program by creating an integrated global research community to address various topics related to rainfall improvement, in particular in drought prone areas around the world.

For her part, Alya Al Mazroui, Director of UAEREP, said: “This webinar series will allow members of the global rain improvement and weather modification research community to share their expertise and knowledge. . In addition, it will allow them to engage with community members interested in this emerging area of research and educate them on its importance as well as the achievements of the UAE as a pioneer in research on improving the quality of life. the rain. “

Al Mazrouei added, “UAEREP has established itself as a leading hub for international research and development efforts in the field of rain improvement science. The strong participation of leading local and international experts and scientists in these virtual sessions will make them an effective platform to highlight the importance of the scientific field and promote the wide-scale adoption of improvement technologies. rain as an effective and sustainable tool to deal with the world’s water scarcity.

The first session of the virtual series included a presentation by Dr Deon Terblanche, Meteorology and Climate Consultant at the World Bank and former Research Director at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), giving a presentation on the history of seeding. hygroscopic flares for the improvement of the rain. followed by a presentation by Sufian Farrah, meteorologist and cloud seeding expert at NCM, who highlighted the UAE’s achievements in improving rainfall through the efforts of NCM, the entity mandated to manage UAEREP.

Since the UAE began its cloud seeding operations in 1990, it has made significant contributions to the advancement of rain improvement research through NCM’s collaboration with several organizations. leading international organizations, including the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Colorado, United States, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Today the country has an extensive network of more than 95 interconnected weather stations, an integrated radar system, four specialized aircraft to perform cloud seeding operations and the Emirates Weather Enhancement Factory. , the first facility in the region to produce high quality hygroscopic flares. for use in cloud seed operations.

The webinar also included a presentation by Noor Al Shamsi, weather forecaster at NCM and meteorology graduate from Abu Dhabi Polytechnic University, who described NCM’s research and development efforts in the area of improving the weather. rain. Al Shamsi also highlighted major research projects undertaken by NCM’s research team to advance the Centre’s cloud seeding capabilities and increase precipitation by identifying seed clouds to ensure the best possible results of its seeding operations.

The ‘Rain Enhancement Hub’ webinar series covers several key topics related to the science of rainfall enhancement and weather modification, including ‘Rainfall trends in the United Arab Emirates / Arabian Peninsula’, ‘Weather patterns‘, “Cloud seeding in the United States”, among others.
