TV meteorologist escapes serious injuries in overturned car on route 7 in Pownal | Local News


POWNAL – A TV meteorologist from Albany, NY escaped a serious injury Friday morning when his SUV overturned in wet conditions on Highway 7.

Vermont State Police reported that at around 7 a.m. Friday, a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Matthew Mackie, 24, a meteorologist with News 10 (WTEN-TV), deviated from the lane towards south of the freeway near Armstrong Lane and overturned at least once. .

Police say the vehicle hydroplaned in the heavy morning rain, causing Mackie to lose control. The SUV struck a railing on the west side of the road, rolled over and came to rest on the grassy shoulder of the roadway.

Mackie was on his way to a weather report in Bennington County when the crash happened, according to Ryan Mott, the station’s editor.

Police say Mackie was taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center for observation. Mott said Mackie was unharmed and was resting at home. His injuries were described as “minor” by state police.

“We are thankful he was not injured,” Mott said. “Accidents happen … luckily he’s fine.”

According to the station’s website, Mackie, a native of Bethesda, Md., Graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla. In meteorology, and joined the station as a meteorologist on the morning weekend. in June 2019.

The soldiers were assisted at the scene by the Pownal Fire Department and workers from the Vermont Agency of Transportation.
